Aadhaar

Jio Studios released the trailer of its upcoming film Aadhaar yesterday, 13 January 2021.Do you remember the time you had to register for an Aadhaar card? It’s hard to believe but the project began almost 10 years ago. And Suman Ghosh has made a feature film around it. Aadhaar is set in 2011 when enrolment began for the Unique Identification Authority of India’s (UIDAI) one-card-fits all project.

The comedy-drama centred around a common man, Pharsua (Vineet Kumar Singh), who is the first in his village in Jharkhand to apply for an Aadhaar card. As he gets caught in the bureaucratic red tape in the process of enrolling his name in the scheme, you almost wonder, was it worth it? The film cast also includes Raghubir Yadav, Saurabh Shukla, Sanjay Mishra, and Prrithvi. Watch the trailer below.

The National Film Award-winning Bengali writer – filmmaker Suman Ghosh makes his debut in Hindi cinema with this film, who also happens to be an economist. He won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali for the 2008 film Podokkhep and his 2017 documentary The Argumentative Indian was very well received (available on Prime Video).

Aadhaar is produced by Drishyam Films and Jio Studios. The teaser of the film was released in September 2019, prior to its world premiere at Busan Film Festival 2019. The film itself was due to release in cinemas across India on 6 December 2019.  Ironically, it seems the film Aadhaar got caught up in the same metaphorical red tape it is based around. Well, it’s here now and we cannot wait to see the man from Mukkabaaz again in action.

If you are brave enough, Aadhaar is slated to release in theatres on February 5. If not, sit back patiently, and we will let you know when it releases on a streaming platform.
