When Kore-eda and Rajkumar Hirani are nominated in the same category! The AACTA Asian Award.

The Australian Academy of Cinema & Television Arts (AACTA) has announced the nominees of the AACTA Award for Best Asian Film presented by Eureka International Group (EIG) and the jury that will choose the winner.

Asian films contributed $36 million AUD to the Australian box office in the last 12 months as per AACTA. The award is presented in honour of “the exceptional calibre of films from the Asian region as well as their growing popularity” globally.

The nominees are:

THE BOLD, THE CORRUPT AND THE BEAUTIFUL by Ya-che Yang (Taiwan)
DYING TO SURVIVE | WO BU SHI YAO SHEN by Muye Wen (China)
GALI GULEIYAN | IN THE SHADOWS by Dipesh Jain (India)
NEWTON by Amit Masurkar (India)
SANJU by Rajkumar Hirani (India)
SHOPLIFTERS by Hirokazu Kore-eda (Japan) (winner of the 2018 Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival)
TOMBIRUO by Seth Larney (Malaysia)
YOUTH | FANG HUA by Feng Xiaogang (China)

The 2018 AACTA Nominations

The jury for the 2018 Best Asian Film Grand Jury will see Russell Crowe as President, and consists of –

Woo-seok Yang (Director, Cartoonist, South Korea)
Kiki Sugino (Actor, Director, Japan)

The winner of the Award will be announced in Sydney on Wednesday 5 December 2018 at the 2018 AACTA Awards Ceremony (presented by Foxtel).
