It is based on the 2012 rape case known as Nirbhaya, where a 23-year old Jyoti Singh Pandey and her friend were attacked in a bus in Delhi. After knocking him unconscious, she was beaten, attacked and gang raped by the six men, including the driver. With severe damage to her organs due to the brutality including using a rod, the injuries led to her eventual death. The country decided to call her Nirbhaya (without fear) to salve its own wounds, though the fear she went through is unimaginable.

With one of the accused dying in jail during the trial period, the other four adult convicts were sentenced to death by hanging. Mohammad Afroz, the only minor amongst them, was released on 20 December 2015, after serving the maximum sentence of three years.
