Uri is set to face a tough competition from Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy which hit the screens this Thursday, 14 February, featuring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. It will be interesting to see if Uri continues its winning streak even after Gully Boy release. But things might or might not change with Gully Boy because of the unfortunate and terrible Pulwama attacks (Kashmir) on the same date martyring 40 CRPF personnel and several others were injured. The film, which released on January 11, pays a tribute to Indian soldiers might have a renewed audience as an antidote for the nation at this time.
The box office collections of the film over the 5 weeks have been as follows –
Week 1 – ₹ 71.26 cr
Week 2 – ₹ 62.77 cr
Week 3 – ₹ 37.02 cr
Week 4 – ₹ 29.34 cr (₹ 200.39 cr)
Week 5 – ₹ 18.74 cr (₹ 219.13 cr)
With crossing the big benchmarks on these days – ₹ 50 cr: Day 5, ₹ 75 cr: Day 8, ₹ 100 cr: Day 10, ₹ 125 cr: Day 13, ₹ 150 cr: Day 17, ₹ 175 cr: Day 23, ₹ 200 cr: Day 28.
The records the film has managed to both set and break so far are –
1. It is the first mid budget film (made and released on a total budget of approximately Rs. 42 crore) to cross a Rs. 200 crore box office collection. This was exactly at the end of 4 weeks.
2. Uri has entered the list of Top 15 biggest grossers of all time in India and may just enter the Top 10 list.
It crossed Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’s business of ₹ 210 crore on Day 31, the 5th weekend to rank 13th. The next film to cross is Chennai Express with a box office of ₹ 227.13 crore.
To enter the Top 10 list, it would have to beat Simmba‘s very recent record of ₹ 240.22 crore.
3. It emerged as the second highest grossing film ever for Week 4 with a collection of ₹ 29.02 cr, after Baahubali 2: Hindi’s ₹ 29.40 cr.
But within the week, it holds the record of highest Day 23 and Day 24.
Day 23: Baahubali 2 ₹ 6.35 cr… Uri ₹ 6.53 cr .
Day 24: Baahubali 2 ₹ 7.80 cr… Uri ₹ 8.71 cr.
4. It has emerged as the highest grossing film ever for Week 5 with a collection of ₹ 18.75 cr, breaking Baahubali 2: Hindi’s records of ₹ 11.78 cr.
It more than smashed the Weekend 5 record held by Baahubali 2: Hindi witnessing an unbelievable 115.96% growth on its fifth Saturday.
Day 29: Baahubali 2 ₹ 1.56 cr… Uri ₹ 2.12 cr
Day 30: Baahubali 2 ₹ 2.25 cr… Uri ₹ 4.67 cr
Day 31: Baahubali 2 ₹ 3.16 cr… Uri ₹ 5.58 cr
Day 32: Baahubali 2 ₹ 1.34 cr… Uri ₹ 1.70 cr
Day 33: Baahubali 2 ₹ 1.22 cr… Uri ₹ 1.63 cr
Day 34: Baahubali 2 ₹ 1.20 cr… Uri ₹ 1.57 cr
Day 35: Baahubali 2 ₹ 1.05 cr… Uri ₹ 1.47 cr.
(Thursday, 14 February is the day Gully Boy released.)
This has entailed breaking records previously held by films like Dangal, Sanju, PK, Padmaavat, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Tiger Zinda Hai and such.
5. FYI, the Week 6 Baahubali 2: Hindi’s records stand at ₹ 5.35 cr. With Uri on 860 screens in Week 6, it should definitely break that record too.
6. This is Vicky Kaushal’s both first solo ₹ 100 crore and ₹ 200 crore film, a feat all the other actors in the ₹ 200 crore club have managed after a decade or more in the industry. i.e. Khan-glomerate – Aamir, Salman, Shah Rukh, Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh. Vicky Kaushal, is less than four years old for the audience, making his debut in May 2015, with a blink and miss appearance in Bombay Velvet and the massive debut in the Cannes Film Festival winning film Masaan that year.
Amazingly, this would end up staying his second highest grosser, due to his brilliant turnout in 2018 film Sanju, which raked in ₹ 342.53 crore in 2018.
7. This film is Yami Gautam’s highest grosser ever and may help put her on the map, which her brilliant debut in Vicky Donor somehow failed to do. (P.S. Vicky may be a lucky name for her, sic.)
8. This was 2019’s first Bollywood release, so it will hold the record for the first blockbuster of the year.
The upcoming films of the 30 year old actor, Vicky Kaushal, include an untitled horror film produced by Dharma, with Bhanu Pratap Singh, who has been assisting Shashank Khaitan is making his directorial debut with this and Takht, Karan Johar’s next directorial, also a Dharma film. The grapevine is also buzzing that he may be rescuing the constantly in limbo Rakesh Sharma biopic, that Shahrukh Khan may have stepped away from, Saare Jahaan Se Accha. Sharma being first Indian citizen to have traveled in space in 1984 at the age of 35, this would make more sense anyway.
