Lola Kutty was an icon of the 90s on Channel V, a time when Channel V and MTV were cool and standup comedy, not a commercial art form. A Malayalam girl in a Kancheepuram saree with a string of jasmine flowers in her braided hair, she would interview celebrities and actors sipping coconut water with a straw in a thick and contentious put on Malayali accent. And she is back!
Amazon Prime Video brings us the new original, Wonder Menon. The show comes from a standup comedy tour across a few cities in India in February 2019 that was recorded by Amazon Prime Video for the purpose of releasing an original.
Anu is seen in her trademark self-deprecatory humour, calling herself a fat Kangana Ranaut and not performing in bed like Sunny Leone. We won’t kill the joke and leave it for you to experience through the trailer. Watch now.
The bawdy and unapologetic humour of Anu Menon brings us a comedy series talking about the absurdity of life and language with humour and multilingual jokes. My favourite joke from the trailer? “Two female pilots flying an aeroplane. Do we still call it a cockpit?”
The formidable lady took a seven-year break to be around her kid in his younger years. She made an official comeback on TV last year after a sabbatical of seven years with TLC’s Queens Vs Kings, other than a special appearance in the 2014 Shah Rukh Khan film Happy New Year.
Ellen DeGeneres and Amy Schumer are the rare females yet amongst the most famous names in standup comedy. Can India appreciate the joy of Anu Menon so she can reach that scale someday?
Wonder Menon is releasing on June 14 only on Amazon Prime video. Add it to your watchlist here.
