Deepika Padukone and Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak bring the acid attack crimes to the national stage. Watch the trailer now.

If you are not already a fan of Meghna Gulzar after Talavar and Raazi, here’s possibly another film to get you there. The trailer of Chhapaak was released today, 10 December, in conjunction with the Human Rights Day.

Deepika Padukone plays Malti in the film, a character based on the story of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal in Chhapaak. Malti is attacked with acid on a street in New Delhi in 2005. As the trailer proceeds, you find her journey to fight for justice along with the help of a few good people she meets on the way, Amol (Vikrant Massey) and her lawyer. But what it seems to tackle about the legal and social state of affairs, the life of an acid attack survivor after, and the campaign to prevent acid attacks in the country by regulating the sale of acid is more poignant.

And you’d be surprised, but the trailer is quite uplifting for such a subject. Watch here.

Laxmi Agarwal was attacked in 2005 when she was just 15 years old. The attacker was a 32-year-old man who was trying to make advances towards her. Laxmi battled for life after the attack and underwent multiple surgeries. After surviving the attack, she started a campaign called Stop Sale Acid to regulate the sale of acid in the country.

Chhapaak has been produced by Fox Star Studios along with Govind Singh Sandhu, Meghna Gulzar and Deepika Padukone, who makes her debut as a producer with this film. The film has been written by Meghna Gulzar along with Atika Chohan.

Chhapaak is set to hit theatres on 10 January 2020.
