“Bose DK”. Have you watched the trailer of Mohalla Assi yet?

The trailer of Mohalla Assi was released by Zee Music Company on 25 October. Directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, the film starring Sunny Deol, Sakshi Tanwar and Ravi Kishan is set in the 1990s in the city of Varanasi. And the cursing flows as freely as the beloved Ganga in it.

The story of a pious and rigid Sanskrit teacher (Deol) from the popular Assi Ghat who is against the vast droves of foreign tourists coming into the city. Until he loses his job, and has to keep one as a paying guest himself. The story follows the struggle between principles and reality and coming to terms with it for him, his wife and others in a fast changing world.

The movie based on award-winning author Kashi Nath Singh’s book award-winning author, is set between 1990 and 1998, against the backdrop of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement to build a temple in Ayodhya at the site of the Babri Mosque and the implementation of the Mandal commission report granting reservations to Other Backward Castes.

Having embattled legal, production and censorship delays for the last 3 years, the highly contentious film is set to release in theatres on November 16. And if the trailer is anything to go by, it is going to make a lot of people uncomfortable. Is that a bad thing? No.
