Asif Kapadia is back with Maradona, thirteen female filmmakers are in. Find out the first lineup of Cannes Film Festival 2019 here.

The 72nd Cannes Film Festival has announced its first lineup this morning for the sections – Competition, Un Certain Regard, Out of Competition, Special Screenings, and Midnight Screenings.

Thirteen female filmmakers have made it into official selection, four of whom will compete for the Palme d’Or, the highest number since 2011. The parallel programs Directors’ Fortnight and Critics’ Week technically fall outside the “Official Selection,” but we are looking forward to those as India tends to finds a spot or two there on occasion.

Of the list below, we are really excited about Asif Kapadia making it into the lineup with his documentary on football legend Diego Maradona Out of Competition. If Amy, Senna, Mindhunter and the Irrfan Khan-starrer The Warrior are to go by, this is not to be missed. The film releases in the UK on 14 June 2019. The director has previously been at Festival De Cannes in 1998 with his student film The Sheep Thief and in 2015 with Cannes nominee and Oscar winner Amy.
