Tumbbad has released in cinemas on October 12. Having opened La Biennale | Venice Film Festival’s Critics Week, out of competition, the horror film by Rahi Anil Barve and Adesh Prasad, has one of the strongest word of mouth going around.

Based on the works of Marathi horror writer, Narayan Dharap, it features producer Sohum Shah in the protagonist’s role. The Indian ghoulish Panchatantra fable, is a horror film set in 1920s British Raj Pune on three generations of a Hindu upper caste family… where greed grows with generations.

Read in 10 tweets why you need to watch this movie in theatres this weekend.

#Tumbbad plays like a surreal drama — the principal sensation is dread, a coiled unease that you feel in the innards. The comparison you reach for isn’t The Conjuring, but something like Don’t Look Now or Lost Highway.

#Tumbbad is astounding, the best horror film I have seen in a long time, gripping, so imaginative, spectacular production, beautifully shot. Amazing, amazing piece of filmmaking. And gosh @s0humshah – what a terrific performance! pic.twitter.com/af1h8Z6KXD

REVIEW: #Tumbbad is the most visually stunning film I’ve seen since #Padmaavat. Here’s @anupamachopra’s take on @BarveRahi’s film starring @s0humshahhttps://t.co/oqfylxfjuj

#Tumbbad is in theatres today – pls go and watch it. Nine years in the making and a very original fantasy horror story. You don’t often get desi films like this one.

There hardly can be a #film that is so well rooted in Indian #culture #history #believes than #tumbbad. Such a great experience. In one scene I almost felt like I was in the womb of a goddess. This is a genre defining film.

Do yourself a favour and watch #Tumbbad. A daring experiment in a kind of “Indian Gothic”. Slow moving dread and relentless atmosphere. Congratulations to @BarveRahi, @s0humshah and the entire team. (Shout out to @ManojRahul who made sure I caught the first show} #TumbbadToday

#Tumbbad is all about the atmospherics, simply wonderful locations, some serious chills. And the rain. Oh the glorious rain!

— Siddhesh Bhobe (@siddheshb) October 12, 2018

#Tumbbad is a pure masterpiece. Bollywood has raised the bar and I hope they make more imaginative and original movies such as this one. Please watch the movie and don’t judge this one by the title or the non creamy star cast. This movie will stay with you. @s0humshah owned it!

— harshel (@doshi_harshel) October 12, 2018

#Tumbbad as expected, a brilliant film that weaves genres of horror allegory oppression through intricate imagery, uncomfortable set pieces, period drama. Everything is layered in a powdery haze, blood red greed & deep resounding sense of foreboding evil.
