The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the official list of submissions for the best foreign language film category for the 91st Academy Awards yesterday. Amongst the 87 countries and their films, there are some high-profile contenders, such as Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” (Mexico) and Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Cold War” (Poland). Both of these films have their USA releases lined up in a bid to break out of the foreign race and earn nominations in the main categories for best picture, best director, and more.

This would only help India’s entry, “Village Rockstars” by Rima Das, to have a chance in the playing field. However, with films like “Capernaum” by Nadine Labaki (Lebanon), “Shoplifters” by Hirokazu Kore-eda (Japan), “Border” (Ali Abbassi, Sweden), “The Guilty” (Gustav Möller, Denmark), Girl” (Lukas Dhont, Belgium), these chances remain slim. India has so far received nominations only three times in the past – Mehboob Khan’s “Mother India” (1957), Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay” (1988) and Ashutosh Gowariker’s “Lagaan” (2001).

The 9 shortlisted films would be announced sometime in December 2018, the 5 nominations on Tuesday, January 22, 2019. The award ceremony will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2019.
