Aamis by Bhaskar Hazarika, and films with Geetanjali Thapa and Freida Pinto are in Tribeca Film Festival 2019. Find out all the details.

Aamis (Ravening) directed and written by Bhaskar Hazarika has been selected in the International Narrative Competition at the 18th Tribeca Film Festival.

The film starring sattriya dancer Lima Das and Arghadeep Baruah is about the relationship between a woman and a younger man. Nirmali, a married paediatrician in her late 30s, leads a peaceful but joyless domestic existence in Guwahati, when she meets Suman, a young PhD student researching food habits in northeastern India and they start to bond over more than food.

Aamis already created buzz for itself at the NFDC Film Bazaar 2018, where it won the Facebook award for the project with the most buzz at the Film Bazaar Recommends strand, earning $10,000 worth of free advertising on Facebook.. The award is calculated on audience votes and number of visits to the film at the Bazaar’s viewing room.

Bhasakar Hazarika’s debut film Kothanodi won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Assamese in 2015 and had its World Premiere at Busan International Film Festival. Aamis is the second feature film for the Masters in Film & Drama degree holder from the University of Reading. The film has been produced by Poonam Deol from Signum Productions, Shyam Bora from Metanormal Motion Pictures and crowdfunded on Wishberry Films.

Noah Land (Nuh Tepesi), directed and written by Cenk Erturk (Germany, Turkey, USA)
A Regular Woman (Nur Eine Frau), directed by Sherry Hormann (Germany)
Roads, directed by Sebastian Schipper, (Germany)
Run, directed and written by Scott Graham (UK)
White As Snow (Blanche Comme Neige), directed by Anne Fontaine (France)

The Indian-American director Sonejuhi Sinha’s Stray Dolls will also premiere at the festival, with Geetanjali Thapa in the lead role, in the USA Narrative Competition. Sonejuhi born in India, moved to New York at 13. This is her debut feature film.
The film is the story of Riz, a recent South Asian immigrant, who takes a job at a seedy motel in a bid to start over in America. The motel’s other employees and guests pull her back into a life she preferred to leave behind.

Stray Dolls

The Freida Pinto-starrer Only, a dystopian thriller, directed and written by Takashi Doscher, will premiere in the Spotlight Narrative section. This is the second feature film for the Atlanta filmmaker.
The film is set after the onset of a mysterious plague that affects only females, Eva (Freida Pinto) may be the only woman left on Earth. Longing for freedom after months of secret quarantine, she and her partner Will (Leslie Odom Jr.) venture out into the unknown.

In the Immersive Section, Sadah Espii Proctor, the Brooklyn, New York based filmmaker presents Girl Icon, an experimental documentary film about Rani. The short VR films is about a girl child from a family relegated to washing clothes because of caste in Varanasi determined to get an education. The projected is backed by Oculus VR for Good.

The 18th Tribeca Film Festival will be held between April 24 and May 5 in New York City.
