The director of Mulk is back with another film asking the hard questions and it is based on true events. Anubhav Sinha and Zee Studios have released the official trailer in quick succession of the teaser of Article 15, starring Ayushmann Khurrana.

Article 15 of the Indian Constitution prohibits the state from discriminating against any citizen on the ground of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth. But in a country as complex as India, has the Article truly been upheld?

The film follows the journey of a police officer who wants to uphold it. The trailer starts with two young girls’ bodies hanging from a tree, who’ve been brutally raped and murdered in a village. The reason behind it? The two girls were Dalit who demanded a hike of Rs 3 in their daily wages from the landowners, who are of the Brahmin community, deemed upper class by some.

Ayushmann Khurrana, who plays the police officer investigating the case, is informed he’s a Brahmin but not as high in the caste structure as the zamindars in question. Watch the trailer.

Because I love little details, the most striking part of the trailer is that all of the protagonist’s dialogues involve asking questions until 1:48. We all need to do that a little more. He does not make a statement or opinion until he loses his cool at the bizarrely normalized caste discrimination, by people to themselves, including those meant to protect civilians from it.
Article 15 takes inspiration from true life events, including the 2014 Badaun gang-rape allegations when the Samajwadi Party was in power in Uttar Pradesh who was accused of favouring the Yadavs, and the 2016 Una flogging incident.
Written by the director Anubhav Sinha with Gaurav Solanki, the film stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Isha Talwar, Sayani Gupta, Kumud Mishra, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Manoj Pahwa.

The teaser was released a few days ago. Watch here.
Article 15 releases on 28 June across India. This is a must-watch film.
